ABOUT

The hardest part of this whole thing is just getting started. It was true then, and it's still true now.

The second hardest part is being happy with a design long enough to start taking the time to collect my thoughts about what the pages themselves are actually supposed to be.

Case in point, this site design is almost 20 years old. I was looking through some old data backups, and I was suprised to find just how much I used to love tweaking site designs, without ever taking the next step and actually building out the site.

I think this time will be different, and part of the fun of this project is going to be re-visiting and incorporating a number of my old designs that could legitimately be called web 1.5. This is a time when Geocities and my Geocities pages definitely still existed, the Web 2.0 design trends were really in their infancy, if they even existed at all. It wasn't quite the unadulterated chaos of the 90's web, but it was nothing like the corpo-slop of today.

I've thought a lot about how much detail I want to include here. Part of the beauty of the old web is that who we are never really mattered, and I'd like to preserve that here. However...some details are neccessary so that we can get to know each other a bit. In the end, I think that's what this whole thing is all about.

As you'll eventually see on my gratitudes page, who I am and the way that my life turned out was in many ways shaped by people on the early web who I looked up to, but who probably didn't even know I existed. I think that's a beautiful thing, and it's a big part of the reason I'm creating this site.
